I purchased this product in March 2008 and have used weekly to bi-weekly since it arrived. READ the directions (and this review! :), as many negative reviewers have not, before you buy!
This is NOT a product for show dogs as it does affect the softness of the coat. Some with golden retrievers and long-haired cats have given bad reviews. The product is NOT FOR USE on such long-haired animals NOR is it for wire-haired animals - I read this before buying mine - some intelligent-sounding reviewers say the directions don't say that, so I put 4 instead of five stars.
The purpose of the FURminator is to remove the undercoat of the dog or cat. That said, when used perpendicular to the pet's skin, and keeping skin taut as you pull the tool through the coat, the tool will remove the undercoat, but THE BLADE DOES CUT SOME OF THE TOP COAT, TOO. As you rake it through, you will see not only the fluffy undercoat, but actual hair pieces. Know that before you buy!
My husky mix does not mind being FURminated at all. She is relieved to get all that fur out of her and to hear how pretty she looks (like instant weight-loss!). Be CAREFUL especially on female dogs - this tool can HURT delicate areas of the dog (and cats, I presume) - nipples, bare or barely-covered-with-fur skin and the skin of the inner thighs. Don't be surprised to see flaky skin - don't press too hard.
Before bathing with an oatmeal shampoo (which lessens skin irritation), I furminate her coat. The reduced hair in the shower is a welcome change as well.
I just took my FURminator to a friend's house today - I FURminated their big black lab, who loved the experience, and the hair removed filled a plastic grocery bag. They want one so I sent the link.Get more detail about FURminator Large Yellow deShedding Tool with 4-Inch Edge.
