I bought this thing after reading all the reviews, and it was well worth the $35! We have a lab/retriever mix, and his shedding has constantly been an issue. There has been a constant layer of hair that covered our floor, couch, cars, clothes, etc. I don't know how it works, and I don't think he particularly likes it, so we have been doing it for only about 2-3 minute sessions, but each combing results in a huge mound of hair. The tool does a decent job for combing the dog, but it is hyped quite a bit. It's not as awesome as some have claimed. I guess I had higher expectations of it from reading the reviews. It removes a lot of hair from the dog and is good along the back and sides, but I think other brushes we've had did better on the legs and our dog liked them more for that part of his body. He does seem to enjoy having his back combed more with this brush.

It's a good sturdy product and I think it will last a long time, probably longer than cheaper brushes. Also I think the handle design is better, heavier and more comfortable than most brushes we've had. The teeth of the comb are substantial and can get down deeper than the cheap brushes with the fine wire bristles.

The furminator is an excellent tool. I used it on all of my animals with good results. It stripped large amounts of hair off of my cat, and lab/boxer, and even stripped a handful off of my Jack Russell. I have used it on my grandmother's keshound as well, though it doesn't work nearly as efficiently. As well as having long hair, the hair on a dog like a keshound or Pomeranian or any dog with similar hair is not only long, but kind of curly. It mats easily and you absolutely have to get as many tangles out as possible, because the furminator does catch any tangle. I got out as many as possible and then went slowly and easily with the furminator. Once I got all the tangles out, then I could use it fairly normally and it stripped out just as much hair as a wire brush, which I'd used twice. Once before and once after a bath. It was more effective in most places when I used both while line brushing. I've also used it on our horses with good success. It's a very good tool and the only thing I see that's a problem is that it catches in tangles and it tends to catch in places like on the shoulders, because the fat or skin bunches up there and you don't want to just pull it through. Besides that, it's a very good tool and I would recommend it for anyone. Just be careful when learning to use it and let it pretty much operate under it's own weight at first till you get the hang of it. I purchased a large and small. To tell you the truth, the large is probably the most versatile. Some people spend very little on a grooming brush and don't see any benefit of using one. They are buying nothing more than a human hair brush, labeled as being for a pet at a grocery store, and paying more for it. The Furminator doesn't cost much more than the grocery store grooming brush. It is FAR cheaper to buy the Furminator here on Amazon than in the pet stores, where it is almost double the price.

I start by brushing my dogs back and she just loves it. The hair comes off in such large quantities that it looks like I've spawned a Chihuahua. While she has thick coarse hair (flat coated retriever) the hair that comes off is seemingly fine and thin. This leads me to believe it is pulling off the undercoat hair that really does need to be removed. After a few minutes of working her back, she flops over onto her side and totally submits to me. I can brush her entire body, even the chest, a bit more gentle of course!

Your dog has to be comfortable with you holding their snout to work around the head. You really need to move their heads around freely with their snout to get anything brushed up there. It is difficult to use the large brush in the immediate nose area. I'd suggest a small Furminator for this purpose.

Works best to run one of the metal loops over the dog once your done with the Furminator. This helps get rid of the loose hair on the dog.

I also use the Furminator on the cats. It is difficult to get more than a few brushes in without getting clawed, but any pass that you can manage is very successful.
