What it does, I think, is CUT the hair--leaving plenty of hair ready to shed (i.e. pulled out by a regular brush or comb). I have a Border Collie mix, with medium to long hair. I have two Labradors which are known for their 'double coat'. Long hair on the surface and a down undercoat.

Every stroke pulled out the loose undercoat by the fistfull. It was a hot summer and you could see the relief in my dogs' eyes. Best of all I vacuum twice a week. Word of advice, be gentle, it is very sharp and will cut the longer hairs if you are too rough.
