I took a chance on this, and am I glad I did. I have a short-haired cat who sheds constantly, and doesn't like to be brushed with anything that gets much hair off.
The first time I used the FURminator, I was surprised by how much hair was removed with each pass, and how well my cat tolerated it. I was able to brush him for several minutes at a time, and collected big piles of hair each time. After a week of daily sessions, his shedding is nearly stopped, and he looks thinner and glossier to boot.
I'd recommend using this outside if possible, and having a vacuum close by to pick up all the hair. I needed to clear the tool after each stroke - more than one would leave loose hair on top of my cat's coat. A light touch is better, letting the weight of the tool do the work.
